400 Customers, Positive Cash Flow, and Positioned in Visionaries Quadrant by Gartner

Here’s what customers are saying about Voltage Security’s information encryption solutions: “It just works.”

The company is continuously bringing innovative new products to market that work to protect the world’s information. As an enterprise security company, founded in 2002, Voltage is a global leader in information encryption with solutions based on next-generation cryptography. Based on a breakthrough known as Identity-Based Encryption (IBE), the company’s first solution secures enterprise email, enabling organizations to use something as simple as a person’s email address as their public key—instead of requiring complex pre-enrollment or revocation checking. Explains Wasim Ahmad, Vice President of Marketing at Voltage, “This innovation removes the need to exchange public keys or distribute and manage digital certificates—making the solution incredibly easy to use for consumers. Voltage IBE dramatically cuts the costs and complexity of infrastructure, providing levels of scalability unobtainable with current solutions.”

According to Ahmad, “There’s a huge amount of sensitive information flowing inside and out of companies—to business partners, customers and business process outsourcers. People are collaborating on business that incorporates sensitive information every day. Voltage first brought to market an innovative email encryption solution, but has expanded to include other areas of data protection that incorporate sensitive information; for example, bank account, credit card, and social security numbers in databases, applications and documents, such as Office documents like Microsoft Excel or Word.”

Ahmad notes that the notion of IBE using an email or group address has a lot of uses, and that the company has also applied the same concept to the problem of protecting files and documents. Explains Ahmad, “While many people think in terms of email because they’re moving information, there also are many other people whose work is centered on spreadsheets, and those need to be protected too. So we found a way to protect spreadsheets simply and easily, from directly within the Office 2007 application itself.“

Voltage’s solutions provide state of the art capabilities for securing business communications and protecting data for the leading financial services, healthcare, government, retail and business process outsourcing companies.

The Microsoft Connection?

Voltage has been working with the Emerging Business Team at Microsoft for a number of years. Explains Ahmad, “Being sponsored by EBT was crucial for Voltage, and enabled the company to gain efficiencies in product development. Once we started thinking about files and documents, we were able to get a hold of some really, really fantastic technical resources in the product group. And in talking through the issues, they validated our approach. Sure enough, not only did it let us put our strong encryption and key management capabilities directly into Microsoft Word and Excel, but we also found that we could take the same notion and framework and apply it to SharePoint.”

The company is now extending its product line from email, which is seamlessly integrated with Outlook and Outlook Express, to protect files and documents on the desktop, and then protecting information in the SharePoint collaboration portal.

Voltage plans to launch its Microsoft Office 2007 product in late January 2008, and the SharePoint component a few months later.

Where Are They Now?

Voltage is achieving record growth and solid financial performance; the company has been cash flow positive from operations for the past three consecutive quarters. It has more than 400 enterprise customers and more than 1.5 million licensed and deployed users at Global 1000 companies in industries such as banking, retail, insurance, energy, healthcare, and government. Customers include the American Board of Family Medicine, Diebold, Integro Insurance Brokers, NTT Communications, SafeAuto Insurance, Winterthur Life UK Ltd., National Life of Vermont, ING Canada, and XL Global Services.

Voltage IBE is a key component of Microsoft Exchange Hosted Encryption, one of four distinct managed services designed for medium-sized businesses. And in 2007, Voltage launched a security-as-a-service (SaaS) product called the Voltage Security Network (VSN), which quickly gained more than 35,000 subscribers in just six months.

Just as impressive. Voltage has some of the largest email encryption implementations in the world. A large US bank has 175,000 people internally using its email encryption solution, and a large healthcare organization has 160,000 internal users.

In mid-November 2007, Voltage Security was positioned in the visionaries’ quadrant in the new Gartner Major Quadrant for Email Encryption 2007. Says Ahmad, “We were the only visionary out of the privately held corporations that were considered, so that was very exciting.”

Recently, Voltage has been covered by many of the leading technology trade publications. Visit Voltage.com for more details.
