Post by Guest Blogger Tony Bailey

Microsoft Intellectual Property Licensing

Microsoft Intellectual Property (IP) Licensing and IP Ventures are part of a newer group in Microsoft that offers access to Microsoft technologies including component source code, protocols, standards and file formats. Find new opportunities in growth markets, speed your innovation cycle, and streamline research and development by licensing Microsoft technologies. Microsoft is committed to licensing its IP on clear, commercially reasonable terms and Microsoft is actively engaged in technology licensing to make it more widely available.

Microsoft Intellectual Property (IP) Licensing (IPL) consists of well-defined technology packages with broad applicability to a number of licensees. The packages are typically standardized offerings that are broadly acceptable with customized terms and conditions to accommodate a variety of licensees and various business models. While some transactions are one-of-a-kind deals, the  focus on putting in place IP licensing programs. Microsoft Intellectual Property (IP) Licensing publicize each program when ready on the official Microsoft IP Web site.

IP Ventures is different to IPL in that IP Ventures has the goal of engaging with startups and focuses on licensing Microsoft Research technology for new venture creation with entrepreneurs, VCs and engagement with government-sponsored economic development agencies.

IPL and IP Ventures are designed to advance interoperability with other platforms and various devices and is a new channel to market Microsoft technologies to solve customer needs. IPL and IP Ventures also help to provide standards contributions and licensing and share innovations for end user benefit.
