Cool Video Startup: ON Networks

ON Networks (ON) is a Web-based video producer and aggregator, specializing in short form content (less than 7mn) displayed in HD. While there are many other short form content aggregators on the market, ON is the only one so far that provides HD quality. This capability is interesting in that it enables viewers to watch the content in high-quality resolution whether they are on a 1” cell phone or a 50” plasma. Currently, viewers can access 30 ON-produced shows and some 300 pieces of short form content produced either by studios or user-generated. This long-tail content is created by users through ON’s Virtual Studio, an easy tool to add video content on their site. Their business model is advertising-based – they offer the flexibility to insert different types of ads in different episodes of the same series. They received funding from AT&T and Austin Ventures.

I have not been that impressed with On Networks especially in comparison to companies like For Your Imagination and NextNewNetworks. For Your Imagination is the clear leader in monetizing content and NextNew has been phenomenal at building brands. On Networks really fails to compete.

Actually, i think ON consistently has much better production value coupled with more interesting shows like you might see on cable TV. I've watched Rev3, FYI, ON, and NNN shows quite a bit. FYI = boring shows; consistently bad sound; NNN is really just Frederator; Rev3 is really just Diggnation. The latter two can't break away from their core techno-lad demographic. they can all improve...and should.
