Emotiv Systems, which has been in stealth mode since it was founded in 2003, will publicly unveil its “brain-reading” headset at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco next week. I first blogged about Emotiv, which is part of part of Microsoft's Startup Accelerator Program, last year. the Company has since then refined what it calls its “high fidelity neuro-system that redefines the realm of human-computer interaction”. Basically, their system enables players to control actions in games (like lifting and rotating objects, moving avatars left/right/forward/back etc) through the power of their thoughts. They wear a headset that reads and transmits basic thoughts and emotions into game playing. At GDC, they will probably show off their Harry Potter game – where you (as Harry) can lift fire out of a firepit and throw it at various objects around you (pillars, walls) and thus destroy everything in sight. My tween kids played with it, they loved it! Emotiv has raised $6.3 million in funding to date. Its investors include Technology Venture Partners (TVP), Epicure Capital Partners and the Australian Federal Government.
