Cool digital music startup: Avvenu

Avvenu , located in Palo Alto CA and funded by Charles River Ventures, Worldview Technology Partners and Motorola, has developed a patented technology which enables music listeners to listen to and share their playlist from their PC to any other PC or cell phone. Users simply send a link to their playlist to their friends, who can click on it on their own PC or cell phone and then listen to it. The music can be shared free for up to 7 plays or 7 days – a clever way to get around piracy of digital music.

The major advantage of this solution is that the music stays in one spot, accessible from anywhere, and Avvenu will host up to 250 tracks in a “private locker” on Avvenu’s servers for listening and sharing when the subscriber’s PC is off.

The company, which launched in 2004 as a document and photo sharing business, launched its music sharing application earlier this year. The application is currently in open beta, and will be officially released when formal agreements with the labels have been finalized.
